„I Need a Man“ je bio debitantski singl za Grejs Džons, prvobitno snimljen i objavljen u Francuskoj za etiketu Orfeus, dok je Džons još radila kao modni model. To je disko i fank pesma. Njeno prvo izdanje prošlo je prilično nezapaženo. Pesma je kasnije ponovo miksovana i objavljena u SAD za manju izdavačku kuću Beam Junction, pre nego što je Džons potpisala ugovor sa Island Records i uključila je na svoj debi album Portfolio iz 1977. godine. „I Need a Man“ je tada postala skroman hit, dostigavši prvo mesto na Bilbord plesnoj listi.
Prema Grejs, originalni pisac pesme, Pol Slejd, bio je „anonimni, vredni momak sa sesije“ koji je pisao engleske tekstove za francuske pevače koji su želeli da pevaju na engleskom. Grejs je tvrdila da je pomogla u pisanju reči za „Treba mi čovek“, ali nije bila navedena kao koscenarista.
